Mission:
Parcel Express!

At the island depot, parcels are stacked in long rows. Anyone who knows their times tables up to 20 can deliver the fastest.

Two yellow Wobbly characters at a harbor parcel depot: one carries a tower of parcels, the other drives a forklift with a pallet full of parcels.

Split Trick

A big stack of parcels is just a stack of ten plus a few more. That turns every big multiplication fact into two small ones.

How the split trick worksSplit the big number into tens + ones. Work out both parts and add.
17 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 60 + 42 = 102

Double & Neighbor

Two pro tricks from the depot: doubling for 12, 14, 16, 18 and the neighbor trick for 19 and 18.

Doubling trick14 is double 7. So 14 × 7 is double 7 × 7 = 49: 14 × 7 = 98.
A

Double it

a)14 × 9 =7 × 9→doubled
b)16 × 8 =8 × 8→doubled
c)18 × 6 =9 × 6→doubled
d)12 × 7 =6 × 7→doubled
Neighbor trick19 is right next to 20. Use 20 and take one group away: 19 × 7 = 20 × 7 − 7 = 140 − 7 = 133. For 18 you take two groups away.

Neighbor trick

Times 1, 2, 10 and 20: 17 × 1 = 17, 17 × 2 = 34 (double), 17 × 10 = 170 (add a zero), 20 × 7 = 140 (twice 10 × 7).

Bonus trick for 15: 15 is 10 + 5, and 5 is half of 10. 15 × 8 = 80 + 40 = 120 (40 is half of 80).

Divide & Fill the Gaps

In the depot everything is shared fairly: the same number of parcels on every shelf. For that you need the inverse fact.

Inverse factsEvery multiplication fact has two related division facts: 13 × 7 = 91, so 91 ÷ 7 = 13 and 91 ÷ 13 = 7. For 91 ÷ 7 ask: What number times 7 makes 91?

Pro Warehouse

In the pro warehouse both numbers are big. No problem: just split the second number.

Split the second number14 × 16 = 14 × 10 + 14 × 6 = 140 + 84 = 224: times 10, then times the ones, then add.

Answers

1 · Split Trick

A 14 × 6 = 60 + 24 = 84
16 × 7 = 70 + 42 = 112
18 × 4 = 40 + 32 = 72
13 × 9 = 90 + 27 = 117
B 15 × 6 = 90 | 12 × 8 = 96 | 17 × 3 = 51 | 11 × 9 = 99 | 19 × 5 = 95 | 14 × 4 = 56 | 16 × 6 = 96 | 13 × 7 = 91

Typical mistake: 17 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 7 = 67. The ones must be multiplied by 6 too: 7 × 6 = 42.

2 · Double & Neighbor

A 7 × 9 = 63 → 126 | 8 × 8 = 64 → 128 | 9 × 6 = 54 → 108 | 6 × 7 = 42 → 84
B 120 − 6 = 114 | 160 − 8 = 152 | 180 − 18 = 162 | 80 − 4 = 76
C 18 × 8 = 144 | 19 × 9 = 171 | 15 × 8 = 120 | 12 × 9 = 108 | 16 × 9 = 144 | 14 × 8 = 112 | 20 × 7 = 140 | 17 × 8 = 136

With 18, take away two groups: 18 × 9 = 180 − 18, not 180 − 9.

3 · Divide & Gaps

A 17 × 6 = 102, 6 × 17 = 102, 102 ÷ 6 = 17, 102 ÷ 17 = 6
13 × 8 = 104, 8 × 13 = 104, 104 ÷ 8 = 13, 104 ÷ 13 = 8
B 84 ÷ 12 = 7 | 126 ÷ 14 = 9 | 135 ÷ 15 = 9 | 152 ÷ 19 = 8 | 96 ÷ 16 = 6 | 117 ÷ 13 = 9 | 190 ÷ 10 = 19 | 34 ÷ 2 = 17
C 13 × 6 = 78 | 17 × 9 = 153 | 20 × 8 = 160 | 18 × 8 = 144 | 19 × 7 = 133 | 16 × 2 = 32

19, 38, 57, 76, 95, 114
160, 144, 128, 112, 96, 80

4 · Pro Warehouse

A 13 × 15 = 130 + 65 = 195
12 × 17 = 120 + 84 = 204
16 × 14 = 160 + 64 = 224
18 × 12 = 180 + 36 = 216
B 13: 78, 104, 156, 182
17: 102, 136, 204, 238
19: 114, 152, 228, 266

4 · Word problems

1: 16 × 9 = 144. That is 144 parcels.
2: 12 × 15 = 180, 180 − 17 = 163. 163 parcels are still on the pallet.

5 · Lightning round

17 × 4 = 68 | 98 ÷ 7 = 14 | 13 × 10 = 130 | 18 × 5 = 90 | 20 × 6 = 120 | 171 ÷ 9 = 19 | 17 × 7 = 119 | 16 × 2 = 32 | 19 × 7 = 133 | 64 ÷ 4 = 16 | 18 × 7 = 126 | 11 × 1 = 11

5 · Error detective

17 × 8 = 126: wrong, correct: 136
19 × 6 = 114: right
15 × 9 = 125: wrong, correct: 135
16 × 7 = 112: right
14 × 13 = 172: wrong, correct: 182

5 · Word problem

126 ÷ 14 = 9. Each shelf gets 9 parcels.

For grown-ups: what helps most

  • 10 minutes every day beats one hour once. The 10-problem trainer test shows the progress.
  • When there is a mistake, have the child explain the trick out loud (“10 times 6 is 60, 7 times 6 is 42 …”), not just correct the answer.
  • The basis is the basic multiplication facts up to 10 × 10. If those wobble, review them first.
