Wobbly Life: Mission Square Builders!
Square plazas made of tiles, a staircase of blocks and a garden full of patterns: in five missions you build every square number from 1² to 20² yourself. Can you become the square champion?
What you practise
- What is a square number? Tile squares, 7² = 7 × 7 (not 7 × 2!) and the first ten square numbers.
- Big squares 11² to 20²: the split trick (13² = 130 + 39) and the square staircase (the jumps grow by 2).
- Square detective: which number times itself makes 196, is 150 a square number, and between which two square numbers does 300 lie?
- Pattern garden: odd numbers build squares, 12 × 14 is one less than 13², and two word problems with tiles.
- Test check: a lightning round forwards and backwards, true or false, number riddles and a traffic-light self-check.
In the pack: five A4 mission pages (one mission a day, about 15 to 20 minutes each) and one page of answers with typical mistakes and tips for grown-ups. Every page comes in English (US) and German.
Interactive version: check every answer in your browser, in English or German. It includes a square trainer with five modes (1² to 10², 11² to 20², backwards, spotting square numbers and mixed), a hint for every mistake and a 10-problem test. The page contains its own images and fonts and works offline; answers are saved only in your browser and never sent anywhere.
This pack is one of five topic packs that go together: times tables to 20, square numbers, tally charts and bar graphs, ordering numbers and rounding. For a mixed review of all five topics, try Mission Number Island.
For printing, use A4 at 100%. Keep the answer key separate until the missions are done.
