Wobbly Life: Mission Rounding Reporters!
Live from the island festival: two reporters, a microphone and a crowd of about 12,000 guests. In five missions you learn to round numbers so everyone can remember them, and correctly. Can you become the rounding champion?
What you practise
- Rounding hill: the rule (0 to 4 down, 5 to 9 up) for tens and hundreds, with a number line picture.
- Breaking news: big numbers to the nearest thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand, the 9 trap (39,970 ≈ 40,000) and why you never round in stages.
- At the fence: the smallest and greatest numbers that round to a value, which numbers round to 800, a digit puzzle and the range on a number line.
- Island news: headlines with rounded numbers, exact or rounded, which place was used, and how far a rounded number is off.
- Test check: a lightning round, true or false, riddles and a traffic-light self-check.
In the pack: five A4 mission pages (one mission a day, about 15 to 20 minutes each) and one page of answers with typical mistakes and tips for grown-ups. Every page comes in English (US) and German.
Interactive version: check every answer in your browser, in English or German. It includes a rounding trainer with seven modes (tens, hundreds, thousands, big numbers, smallest and greatest, which place and mixed), a hint showing which digit decides, and a 10-problem test. The page contains its own images and fonts and works offline; answers are saved only in your browser and never sent anywhere.
This pack is one of five topic packs that go together: times tables to 20, square numbers, tally charts and bar graphs, ordering numbers and rounding. For a mixed review of all five topics, try Mission Number Island.
For printing, use A4 at 100%. Keep the answer key separate until the missions are done.
