Mission:
High Score Chase!

In the island race every meter counts: who is ahead, who is just behind? The number line keeps track of it all.

Two yellow Wobbly characters ride scooters along a seaside boardwalk with a giant line of tick marks painted on it like a number line.

How to practice: one mission a day (15 to 20 minutes) and 5 minutes in the trainer. On a number line, always find the small step first.

Tablet tip: In the ordering trainer you practice neighbors, < and >, number lines and halfway points, with a hint for every mistake and a 10-problem test.

One Step Forward, One Back

On the scoreboard every point counts. The number just before yours and the number just after are your neighbors.

Number before and number afterThe number before (predecessor) is 1 less, the number after (successor) is 1 more: 4,999 ← 5,000 → 5,001. Watch the zeros: the number before 10,000 is 9,999.

Who Is Ahead?

The scoreboard needs sorting. For that you compare numbers like a pro.

How to compare1. More digits = greater number. 2. Same number of digits? Compare place by place from the left. The first digit that is different decides.
The point of < and > always faces the smaller number: 3 < 8, 8 > 3.

On the Race Track

The race track is a giant number line. But careful: not every small mark is worth 1!

Find the step first, then readLook at two labeled long marks. Count the small steps between them. Divide the distance by the number of steps: that is what one small step is worth.

Answers

1 · Neighbors

A 2,998 ← 2,999 → 3,000
49,999 ← 50,000 → 50,001
8,099 ← 8,100 → 8,101
99,998 ← 99,999 → 100,000
39,999 ← 40,000 → 40,001

Typical mistake: number before 50,000 = 49,000. Correct: 49,999.

2 · Who Is Ahead?

A 9,999 < 10,000 | 45,678 < 45,687 | 30,303 > 30,033 | 7,010 > 7,001 | 123,456 > 99,999 | 80,080 < 80,800 | 6,543 > 6,534 | 100,001 < 100,010 | 59,999 < 60,000
B 20,864 < 24,068 < 24,608 < 24,680 < 26,480 < 28,046
C 9,990 > 9,909 > 9,900 > 9,099 > 9,009
D greatest 75,310 | smallest 10,357
E 1,999 | 2,000 | 2,001 | 2,002

Typical mistake: putting the 0 in front. A five-digit number cannot start with 0, so the smallest is 10,357.

3 · Race Track

A step 10 | A = 30 | B = 110 | C = 170
B step 50 | A = 150 | B = 600 | C = 850
C step 100 | A = 2,300 | B = 2,700 | C = 2,900
D step 5,000 | A = 15,000 | B = 40,000 | C = 85,000

Typical mistake: counting each small mark as 1. Always find the step first.

B A = 300 | B = 1,100 | C = 1,800
C 1: 9,999 | 2: 100,000 | 3: 750

For grown-ups: what helps most

  • Practice the numbers before and after round numbers (40,000, 100,000). That is where most mistakes happen.
  • On a number line, have the child ask out loud: “How much is one small step?”
  • Memory aid for < and >: the point faces the smaller number.
